Description
Like a kelpie without a ball, a winemaker without grapes is not a happy man. Normally a hive of activity, vintage 2020 in Canberra was still and quiet. Smoke from the devastating bushfires was so thick and persistent that it rendered the entire vintage a write-off.
With an insatiable desire to make wine, and a curiosity that would kill more than one cat, owner and winemaker Bobbie Makin decided to have a crack at making something. He harvested tainted Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz grapes, destemmed and blended the fruit then dry fermented the experimental smoky mess.
After aging for 26 months on seasoned French oak the result is 2020 Old Smoky. Bottled as an example for the education of future winemakers and curious wine enthusiasts.
